If you have encountered problems either registering or gaining access to the archives, or you want to know the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ relating to this area of our site, please read through the following frequently asked questions (FAQs). We can provide help where genuine problems exist, but 99 per cent can be resolved simply by reading these suggestions - enabling us to concentrate on fixing or advising on more complex issues.

If, having followed our suggestions, you still need help, you can contact us and we will try to provide an answer. If you do need to contact us, please describe the problem you are having, tell us what steps you have already tried and, if possible, the type and version of browser you are using.

How much is delivery?

If you subscribe to the print edition you’ll receive free delivery to your home or work address. If you subscribe to the digital edition your delivery will be free via email.

When will my first issue arrive?

Once you have placed your order you will receive a confirmation email, usually within a few minutes. Please ensure you check your Junk folder if you do not receive an email. You will then receive a letter confirming exactly when you will receive your first issue.

How often is Nursing Standard published?

Nursing Standard is published every Wednesday, excluding two issues over the festive period.

Registration and access

How do I access the digital edition?

Please read how to access your digital journal (PDF, 410k).
In order to access your digital edition, you will need a valid digital subscription. If you require your subscription number, then please contact the journals team, quoting your details, using the details at the bottom of this page.

I can’t register or log-in. What are the likely reasons?

In order to access our archive, your browser must have ‘cookies’ enabled; if you are using a computer on which the browser has 'cookies' disabled, you will NOT be able to gain access to the archive. Internet Explorer 6 users in particular should note that its default setting is to reject ALL cookies.

The ‘enable/disable cookies’ control is usually found in your browser’s Tools menu; open your browser’s Help facility for full instructions. If you are not working on your own PC, request permission from the owner/administrator first. My registration request has failed. What do I need to check?

The most likely reason for failed registration is incomplete information. When you fill out the form, you will notice that some questions are followed by a * symbol - these are known as ‘mandatory fields’. If you leave any of these empty, your registration will automatically fail.

Help - I’ve forgotten my password!

No problem. Just follow this password link and we will email it to you.

What is my 'email address’?

This is simply the email address you used when registering, and needs to be a valid address by which you can be contacted. If you have problems trying to access the archive after having registered, please make sure you are entering your address correctly (bearing in mind that details are CaSe sensitive).

I have entered my email and password, but it still won’t let me in.

The most common cause of this is mis-entry of the details. Ensure that you type both email address and password exactly as when you registered. For instance, is not the same as s Similarly, ‘My PaSSword’ is not the same as ‘mypassword’, nor ‘mypassword’ the same as ‘MYPASSWORD’ (an easy mistake to make if you have inadvertently pressed caps lock on your keyboard).

I have received a message saying my email is incorrect but I’ve double-checked and it’s fine. What should I do?

Please check that cookies are enabled on your computer (see above).

I don’t have email - can I still access the archive?

In order to access the archive, you must (i) have a valid email address and (ii) create a password of your choice. Both are essential so no, if you don’t have an email address, you will not be able to enter this area of our site.

I share an email address with a friend - can we both use the archive?

No. Every registered user needs a unique email address and their own password. If someone has already registered using your email address, our system will not accept a second registration with the same address.

I want to re-register from the same email address. Is this possible?

No. Once an email has been entered into our database, any attempt to re-register using the same address will be rejected.

I have changed my email address. Do I need to re-register?

No, you can update your details by following the update my details link.

I accessed the archive without problems yesterday - now it won’t work. Why?

This is probably either a fault with your connection or due to heavy traffic at peak periods (an unusually large number of visitors may sometimes result in slow or delayed access). Very occasionally, essential maintenance work will be carried out on the server, resulting in all access being denied. This work will be carried out quickly and, whenever possible, at times likely to cause least disruption to service.

I've tried everything but still can’t get in. Now what?

As a final check, it is often worth trying to register/access the archive from a different computer; this will help to establish whether the problem is due to your browser and/or cookie settings. If you don’t have access to another computer, please contact us with details of your specific problem and we will try to help.

Do I need to register every time I use the archive?

No. Once you have registered successfully, the next time you want to access the archive all you need do is enter your email address and the password you chose when you registered, then click the ‘Enter’ button.

Can you offer advice on browser types?

Generally speaking, the more up to date your browser, the more likely you are to enjoy a successful visit. Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator are the most commonly used browsers and, if you are using a version earlier than 4, you are likely to benefit by downloading a more recent version from the following site(s):

Why do you need so much information about me before I can register?

Our aim is to provide an archive that is extensive, up to date and - above all - relevant to your requirements. By building an accurate profile of our registered users, we can ensure that the information we provide is as useful as possible, to as many of our users as possible.

Will my details be sold or passed on to other organisations?

We do not release the information we hold about our subscribers to any third party outside of the RCN. For more information, please see our privacy policy.

Will I receive unwanted e-mail communications from RCN Publishing?

When you register, you are given the option of whether you would like to receive information about RCN Publishing journals and events that may be of interest to you. If you do not wish to use this service, simply select the ‘No’ button. The only circumstance under which we would then contact you is if we have important news concerning our archive.

Using the archive

I am looking for a specific article but can’t find it - any tips?

The easiest way to find articles on a specific subject is via the Search facility. Alternatively, if you have an idea of when a particular article was published, you can look through our listings by year. However it’s important to remember that, while extensive, our archive is not a comprehensive resource of every article ever published in the printed journal. If you have tried the search facility or browsed our listings by year and not found the article, then it is almost certainly not available. We suggest contacting your library or asking colleagues if they can help.

Can I request publication of a particular article?

The content of our archive is carefully considered and agreed by our editorial team. We are unable to respond to individual requests for articles to be published on the site.

When I choose an article the screen just goes blank and nothing happens?

The most likely cause of this is that you have followed a direct link to a PDF and your browser is starting up its PDF viewer and downloading the file (see below for more information on PDFs). Otherwise it may be due to your connection to the internet or a setting or function which is missing from your computer. We suggest trying another computer to find out where the problem lies.

I’m having problems with PDF files. What can I do?

Articles saved in PDF format offer a number of advantages in that they are easy to print and can be downloaded onto your computer for future reference. In order to print these files, you will need an up to date version of Adobe Acrobat Reader (preferably version 3 or higher). If you don’t have this program or are running an old version, you can download the latest version - free of charge - from

I’m unable to view PDFs on my browser. What’s the problem?

If you follow a direct link to a PDF, your screen may well go ‘blank’ while your browser starts up its PDF viewer and downloads the file. Depending on the size of the PDF, this could take half a minute or more so please be patient. If nothing happens, this is probably due to using an old version of a browser. Please see above for details of how to download latest browser versions. Also, if your computer is running low on memory, it may be that the PDF viewer plug-in cannot start up inside your browser, so you'd be better advised to save the PDF and open it off-line.

How do I save a PDF to my computer?

If you would prefer to download a PDF onto your computer for printing or future reference, put the cursor on the PDF link and hold down the right hand button on your mouse. A menu will then appear - choose ‘Save target as’ to save it onto your computer.

Are there any restrictions on use of information in the archive?

All the articles contained in our archive are freely available for reference or research purposes. However, no information may be republished without the express permission of RCN Publishing.

Why do I have to subscribe?

Why do I now need to subscribe when I had free access before?

If you are a subscriber to an RCN Publishing journal, access to the archive remains entirely free.

Why do I have to pay as a non-subscriber?

Maintaining such an extensive archive takes up a great deal of resource and the more visitors we have, the greater the expense in terms of bandwidth. Every article that appears in our archive has also been published in an RCN Publishing journal, and the associated costs are paid for through subscriptions. We believe that it is only fair that non-subscribers wishing to benefit from this work should make a contribution towards our costs.
